 살아 있는 모든 것은 다 행복하라

 

 

살아 있는 모든 것은 다 행복하라

태평하라

안락하라.

 

어떠한 생물일지라도

겁에 떨거나 강하고 굳세거나

그리고 긴 것이건 큰 것이건

중간치건 짧고 가는 것이건

또는 조잡하고 거대한 것이건

 

눈에 보이는 것이나 보이지 않는 것이나

멀리 또는 가까이 살고 있는 것이나

이미 태어난 것이나 앞으로 태어날 것이거나

모든 살아 있는 것은 다 행복하라.

 

마치 어머니가

목숨을 걸고 외아들을 아끼듯이

모든 살아 있는 것에 대해서

한량없는 자비심을 내라.

 

또한 온 세계에 대해서

한량없는 자비를 행하라

위 아래로 또는 옆으로

장애와 원한과 적의가 없는

자비를 행하라.

 

서 있을 때나 길을 갈 때나

앉아 있을 때나 누워서 잠들지 않는 한

이 자비심을 굳게 가지라

이 세상에서는 이러한 상태를

신성한 경지라 부른다.
